Gqeberha Stake's Mission of Hope

On Saturday, December 14,  2024, volunteers came together to improve the infrastructure of Nonkqubela Preschool in Motherwell, Gqeberha. As part of the annual Light the World campaign, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provided much-needed support to the preschool. Guided by Bulelani Matenjwa, the local ward councillor for Motherwell, the Gqeberha Stake worked to improve some of the school’s facilities, creating a safer and more comfortable environment for its learners.

Nonkqubela Preschool faced numerous challenges, including broken ceiling boards, exposed electrical wiring, peeling paint, leaking toilets, and a jungle gym missing swings. These conditions hindered learning and posed significant safety risks for the children.

Volunteers came together to improve the school’s infrastructure. They repaired leaking toilets, installed new cisterns, and gave the classrooms and exterior walls a fresh coat of paint. Overgrown grass was trimmed, and a new set of long-awaited swings was added to the jungle gym.

Councillor Matenjwa explained the anticipated impact of the donation. “What does it mean for young children at Nonkqubela Preschool? … It means we are ensuring a safer, cleaner, and more inspiring space for the learners.”

Speaking about the day’s events, he added, “What stood out most was the spirit of unity and selflessness. Volunteers worked tirelessly with smiles on their faces, showing that when we come together, we can make a real difference in our communities.”

Sam van Thiel, Gqeberha Stake Communication Director, expressed her gratitude, saying, “It was both humbling and an honour to work alongside Nonkqubela Preschool. While there is still much to be done, we are thankful for everyone’s efforts and for the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.”

Through this project, the Gqeberha Stake embodied the true essence of the Christmas season: spreading hope, joy, and love through meaningful acts of Christlike service.
