On Tuesday, December 10, 2024, the YSA Branch in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, became a beacon of hope during this year’s Light the World campaign. In collaboration with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), the Africa South Area Office of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organised a blood drive that brought people together in the spirit of service and compassion.
The blood drive welcomed individuals from across Johannesburg who came together to make a tangible difference.
The partnership with SANBS, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing safe blood transfusions across South Africa, underscored the impact of collective action. As SANBS phlebotomist James Makgatho explained, “Blood drives have an incredible impact, with one blood donation potentially saving up to three lives. We’ve only just started, and 10 people have already donated—that’s 30 lives saved in just 30 minutes.”
Makgatho also highlighted the importance of specific blood types, stating, “We need all blood types, but when we receive O-negative (O-) and O-positive (O+), we’re thrilled because these can help a broader range of patients, especially in emergencies. O-negative donors are particularly vital, as they can only receive O-negative blood themselves.”
For those hesitant about donating blood, Makgatho offered reassurance: “Blood donation is one of the most seamless procedures. You’ll feel a small pinch, but that’s about it. We have the best ‘blood suckers’ around! Today, we’ve had five first-time donors, and no tears were shed.”
Donors received #LightTheWorld t-shirts alongside other thoughtful tokens of appreciation.
The invitation is out for everyone to Light the World with hope by doing small acts of service. This blood drive in Johannesburg is just one example of how service can transform not only individual lives but entire communities.
