A Shelter for New Mothers

A Shelter for New Mothers

Honorable Chiwetu, a member of Parliament, brought LDS Charities couple, Larry and Debbie McMurdie to view possible projects in his area in East Marondera, Zimbabwe.

They viewed two unused rooms at the Igava Clinic. A transformation then took place. The senior missionary couple along with others were able to provide materials and manpower: a new mothers' shelter resulted.  Pregnant women are able to stay for up to 6 weeks before they deliver.

Also provided were eight new hospital beds, sheets, blankets, pillows and pillow cases. The clinic staff had planned to make new curtains, but could not find a sewing machine. Sister McMurdie sewed them herself and provide the rods for hanging. The Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from several units worked together to make blankets for newborn kits, which were then assembled by other senior couples serving in Harare. Over 100 kits were donated to the mothers' shelter. Now, mothers in this area who are ready to deliver their babies have a safe, clean environment to welcome their baby into the world.
