East London - Light The World Fun Run

On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the East London Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints united in a spirit of service for a 5km Fun Run in support of the East London Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). As part of the global Light the World campaign. The event formed part of the global Light the World campaign, an initiative that encourages simple acts of kindness to bring hope around the world. Instead of paying an entry fee, participants were invited to donate cat or dog food, which were later gifted to the SPCA to support their ongoing work in animal welfare.

Dressed in red Light the World t-shirts, just over 200 community members and friends of the Church set off from the Gonubie Hotel parking lot, supported by 30 volunteers assisting with marshalling, handing out water bottles, and managing registration. The event’s success serves as a beautiful reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference, inspiring others to come together to follow the Saviour’s example of serving others.

Brent Sanders, the General Manager and Trainee Inspector at the East London SPCA, expressed his gratitude for the Light the World 5km Fun Run held in Gonubie. He shared that the event had a great turnout and that participants generously donated food to support the animals in their care. According to Sanders, the Light the World initiative has become an annual tradition that makes a meaningful difference at their shelter.

He explained that every contribution, whether a bag or a tin of food, goes a long way in helping sustain their work. Sanders emphasized that the SPCA operates as a non-profit organization and receives no government funding, relying entirely on public donations to continue their mission. He described the event as a “wonderful initiative” and said they look forward to participating again next year.
